About The Pastor:
 
The Reverend Dr. Melvin L. Grimes is the son of the late Reverend William and Charlotte M. Grimes.
 
Dr. Grimes was educated in the Rock Island School District 41 graduating in 1970.  Following high school, he attended Black Hawk College, Moline IL and Kalamazoo College, Kalamazoo, MI., graduating in 1975 with a Bachelors degree in Religion and Sociology.
 
In November of 2000, Dr. Grimes received his Masters of Divinity from Grace Valley Theological Seminary, Edinburgh TX. In December of 2002, Dr. Grimes received his Doctorate of Ministry Degree from Grace Valley Theological Seminary, Edinburgh TX.

Currently Dr. Grimes will be securing an additional degree in theology from Campbellsville University, Campbellsville Kentucky.

Dr. Grimes acknowledged his call to the ministry and was licensed by the Second Baptist Church, Rock Island IL where his father, Rev. William Grimes was the pastor. In 1975 he was ordained.  Grimes served as the Assistant Pastor to Second Baptist until relocating to Waterloo IA in 1979.
 
In Waterloo he served as Associate Minister at the Corinthian Baptist Church, under the leadership of the late Reverend A.E. Mills, Jr..
 
In 1984 Dr Grimes was called to pastor the historic Washington Avenue Baptist Church, Springfield MO. While at Washington Avenue, a new education building was constructed as well as a strong college student ministry comprising of students from Missouri State University, Drury College, and Southwestern Bible College in Bolivar MO
 
In November of 1989 Dr. Grimes accepted the call to pastor Tabernacle Baptist Church, Moline, IL. Dr. Grimes continues to serve Tabernacle Church with distinction.
 
Dr. Grimes serves on numerous boards and committees in the Quad-Cities area.  He also serves as Financial Secretary for the Wood River Baptist District Association and as instructor in the Baptist General State Congress Christian Education. Grimes served as a part of the Christian Educations Staff for the National Baptist Congress of Christian Education.
 
In addition to his denominational involvement, Dr. Grimes serves as a commissioner and Chairman of the Board for the Moline Housing Authority, State of Illinois Council on Aging, Past President and Finance Chair for Churches United of the Quad-Cities board of directors, Aldridge Early Learning Center board of directors, Chairperson of the Stewartville Neighborhood Partnership.

On January 26, 2017, Dr. Grimes will become President of the Western Illinois Area Agency on Aging.

In April of 2009, Dr. Grimes received the Humanitarian of the Year Award from Church Women United.
 
In June of 2010 Dr. Grimes received the Image Award in Religion from the Rock Island County NAACP Branch.  Dr. Grimes also received recognition from the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity for his long time support of their youth programs.

In April of 2016  Dr. Grimes received the Alvira Long Memorial Award for Commissioners. The award was presented by the North Central Regional Conference of NAHRO (National Association of Housing and Redevelopment Officials), in recognition of Housing Authority Commissioners who demonstrate exceptional leadership in their respective  community.

Dr. Grimes has one daughter, Melissa and two grandchildren Mehkia and Cadence who are the apple of pastor's eye.
